5 Easy Ways to Go Green Without Going Broke

Updated: Nov 25, 2019

We all love the planet we live on, right? So let's do our best to take care of it and be good stewards! Below you will find five easy and affordable things that you can incorporate into your everyday life to help reduce your ecological footprint. Help make our planet safe and clean for the coming generations!

1. Say no to bottled water! Bottled water is the easiest way to cut back on contributing to pollution. A quality reusable water bottle costs between $15-30 and is cheaper in the long run than using one-use plastic. If you do use plastic bottles, and can't change that habit for other reasons, be sure to recycle them instead of putting them in the trash!

2. Use online options when you can! Bills, movie tickets, receipts, and more can all be purchased/received online nowadays. This is a great way to reduce the amount of plastic-coated paper being produced. When we limit the amount of paper wastage, the need for deforestation (for paper purposes) goes down. Less consumer demand = fewer reasons for producers to supply!

3. Bring your own reusable bags to your local grocery store! I like doing this for multiple reasons, the main one being less plastic. However, there are also some really cute bags out there with sweet designs, or you can customize your own! It makes it a bit easier, too, because you can put your wallet/keys/phone in the bag, and you don't have to worry about a purse or anything. We all love seeing sea turtles and other marine life when we go swimming, so we should limit the amount of plastic bags that could end up in our oceans!

4. Cut down on electricity! This one especially benefits your wallet: less electricity = lower electricity bill! It also affects the environment in a positive way. When we use less electricity, we decrease the amount of emissions from power plants. This leads to very positive effects when every one pitches in. Our individual actions matter!

5. Reduce water usage! Again, less water = lower water bill. When we take long showers, rinse our dishes before we put them in the dishwasher, or use our washing machine more than necessary we use one of the earth's most precious resources. Unfortunately, water is not a renewable resource and the quantity and quality are decreasing rapidly due to pollution. Analyze your water usage habits and see where you can cut back!

I hope everyone can use these tips to make daily life more environmentally-friendly! It takes 21 days to break or form a habit- finding ways to improve our habits helps us not only feel better about ourselves but also makes the environment cleaner. Plus, your wallet will thank you!
